چکیده
The Formosa Satellite-7/Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate-2 (Satellite-7/COSMIC-2), which was successfully launched on 25 June 2019, provides dense radio occultation (RO) observations over the tropics subtropics. This study examines RO-observed lowest altitude its possible relationship to refractivity gradients planetary boundary layer (PBL) heights. COSMIC-2 RO data Southeast Pacific region (SEP) South-Central (SCP) from August 2020 are employed determine their altitudes, European Centre Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) ERA5 reanalysis used obtain of refractivity. Results show that there no ray perigees below PBL top when vertical gradient N?N(r) is strong (<?65 N-unit km?1), where N(r) represents profile spherically symmetric Significantly local due atmospheric ducting occur more frequently SEP than SCP areas. For some cases, a horizontal in tangent direction near perigee point can also limit going further even relatively weak. Fortunately, only about 0.6% profiles unaffected by above factors but cannot observe 2-km altitude.

The seasonal cycle of planetary boundary layer depth determined using COSMIC radio occultation data
[1] The seasonal cycle of planetary boundary layer (PBL) depth is examined globally using observations from the Constellation Observing System for the Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate (COSMIC) satellite mission. COSMIC uses GPS radio occultation to derive the vertical profile of refractivity at high vertical resolution (~100m). Here, we apply an algorithm to determine PBL top height and thu...
متن کاملVertical Gradients of Refractivity in the Mesosphere and Atmosphere Retrieved from GPS/MET and CHAMP Radio Occultation Data
Fine structures in the vertical gradient of the electron density have been retrieved by means of analysis of the amplitude of radio occultation (RO) data in sporadic E-layers (heights interval 85-110 km). Maximum values of the positive gradients 45⋅10, 48⋅10, 25⋅10, 29⋅10 [mkm] are located at levels 92, 105 km (GPS/MET event 0393) and 93.5, 100 km (GPS/MET event 0583). Variations in the vertica...
متن کاملReply to comment by A. von Engeln et al. on ‘‘Monitoring the atmospheric boundary layer by GPS radio occultation signals recorded in the open-loop mode’’
[1] We thank von Engeln et al. for their comment [von Engeln et al., 2007] (hereinafter referred to as VE07) on our paper [Sokolovskiy et al., 2006] (referred to as S06 in the comment). VE07 said that S06 used five definitions of the PBL top height without addressing their difference. By performing additional study, VE07 demonstrated that different definitions result in different heights. We be...
متن کاملDetermination of Vertical Refractivity Structure from Ground-based GPS Observations
The primary scientific objective of this research is to develop GPS sounding techniques for ground based atmospheric refractivity sensing. Atmospheric profiling with GPS from space has been demonstrated (e.g. Rocken et al., 1997). Ground based receivers have been used to determine integrated atmospheric water vapor above a site, but profiling techniques with ground-based GPS observations are st...
متن کاملJp1j.14 Differences between Explicit and Approximated Radar Ray Paths Due to the Vertical Gradient of Refractivity
The United States operational WSR-88D Doppler radar radar network (NEXRAD) is becoming increasingly important for improving the real time detection and warning of hazardous weather (Alberty et al. 1991; Crum et al. 1998; Serafin and Wilson 2000). It is viewed as an essential observing system for initializing nonhydrostatic, storm-resolving (i.e., horizontal grid spacing of order 1 km) numerical...
